How to Install a Tile Vent
A tile vent is one of the neatest solutions when you are installing a new ventilation system in your building. The importance of ventilation in any residential or commercial structure is well known. In fact, a healthy living or work place requires apt ventilation so that fresh air is always available to the occupants of the structure.
However, it is also important to understand the correct method of making this installation so as to protect your home or workplace from unwanted moisture and damage. Given below are a few simple steps to install a tile vent in your home.
What You Need
* Tile vents
* Saber saw / Circular saw
* Screws / Screwdriver
* Pencil / Chalk line
* Flat Bar
* Measuring tape (preferably steel)
* Saber knife / Utility knife / Putty knife
* Level
* Plastic cement
* Hammer
* Step ladder
* Safety goggles
Step 1 – Preparing the Vent
With the flat bar, remove any tiles, cement or shingles from the surface where you are installing the vent. Since heat makes both tiles and shingles a little easier to remove, it is best to do this late in the morning or early in the afternoon. Once these are removed, strike a line measuring about 7 to 8 inches using a chalk line.
Step 2 – Making the Vent
Use your circular saw to cut out the vent. However, before you begin working with the saw, make sure that you are using a blade which is sufficient for cutting through the sheathing of the surface. When using the circular blade, wear safety goggles. Follow the chalk lines to make the cut.
Step 3 – Finishing up the Cut
Use a large chisel to pry open any wooden cuts made by the saw. If the sheathing needs to be removed, use a pry bar to remove it. If there are any nails on the surface, pry these loose.
Step 4 – Installing the Vent
Install the tile vent so that it covers the entire section of the surface that you have removed. Use nails or copper screws to nail the cent to the surface. If you are installing the vents on the roof, it is recommended that you use plastic tile vents since they are not very heavy and are easy to install at a height.
Step 5 – Finishing the Vent
Once you have installed the vent completely, it is important to put back the removed sheathing, tiles or shingles on the surface. If the vent has been closed completely, the shingles can be nailed back around it. If the surface is covered in tiles, use the plastic cement to cement the tiles back into their place so that the vent doesn’t look ugly or out-of-place. If you have damaged any shingles or tiles while removing them, be sure to replace them with material that is either the same or matches the damaged material most closely.
Step 6 – Grouting
If you have replaced tiles on the surface, make sure you apply grout to the spaces between the tiles so that they do not look odd. You can use white cement for a close finish.
